Despite having spent close to a decade in the Midwest, I had never attended a rodeo of any sort. So, when I discovered the Dayton Wranglers Youth Rodeo, in Dayton, Iowa, I jumped at the chance to go make frames at their competition.
The youth, ranging from 13-18, compete in a variety of events that range from navigating a series of poles to attempting ride atop an ornery bull for a predetermined amount of time.
It is impressive to see these kids attempt activities attempt that I would not, even on my bravest day.
Overall, I just left the daylong event reminded that the rural nature of Iowa extends beyond cornfields and the soybeans that most people associate with the state. There are things to see and do here that will expand anybody's cultural horizons.
