There have been a lot of firsts for me recently, especially as they relate to shooting and attending events I haven't in the past.
And on November 21, I crossed off yet another first - mixed martial arts. My initial story idea was to cover an athlete's training process and then attempt to capture the whole fight experience - the preparations on the day of the fight, the post fight pain relief, all of it.
Alas, the story did not play out as planned, but I still attended the Midwest Cage Championship 44 Thanksgiving Throwdown to get a better understanding of the sport and the challenges of shooting the sport.
Though I was unable to shoot from the catwalk, or from right next to it, I walked away with some useable frames. The one above is of Jeff Lewis, a fighter who I met through the Des Moines Jiu-Jitsu Academy (As a side note, the guys at the Academy are some of the nicest I have met while covering sports.)
I am getting another chance to shoot MMA at MCC 45, this time from the catwalk, and am looking forward to it.
